Where Have All the Good Seeds Gone?
In 1903, there were seeds available to grow hundreds of varieties of the ten sample crops shown here. 80 years later, seeds for only a few of each type could be found resulting in a 96% reduction in our food variety.
“Today 15 plant and 8 animal species are now relied upon for about 90% of all human food.”
What can be done? Some are turning to “seed-saving” from fruits and vegetables grown from non-hybrid, organic, heirloom seed sources.
We’ll be giving it a go this season to help preserve 13 varieties with the Urban Collection from Living Seed Company.
