In 1903, there were seeds available to grow hundreds of varieties of the ten sample crops shown here. 80 years later, seeds for only a few of each type could be found resulting in a 96% reduction in our food variety.

“Today 15 plant and 8 animal species are now relied upon for about 90% of all human food.”

What can be done? Some are turning to “seed-saving” from fruits and vegetables grown from non-hybrid, organic, heirloom seed sources.

We’ll be giving it a go this season to help preserve 13 varieties with the Urban Collection from Living Seed Company.

Felix Salmon puts forth the suggestion that the U.S. would do well to follow the Chinese model of investing in urban infrastructure to foster more high tech service industry jobs. Others aren’t so sure that our cities can be retrofitted to support a swell of new households. What do you think?

I just stumbled upon this great post about a new Vertical Farm project at Chicago airport. Check out the images and notice the varieties of foods that can be grown on these small food production towers.

Set in a seemingly unused nook of the G Terminal, a mezzanine space has been transformed into a high-tech urban garden. I see a lot of projects like this one – usually they have a DIY vibe that is quite inspiring (hey, even I could do that!) This urban garden however looked like it came out of a ride at Disney.

www.urbangardensweb.com

SO COOL!

Edible flowers and ready to eat lettuce. Yummy!

What looks like the most comfortable chairs in the airport are set up around the installation with tables to create a park-like setting. Between the view of the runways and the “sunny” urban garden I now know where I’ll be killing time for the next delayed flight.

www.urbangardensweb.com

DIY experimental Vertical Farming projects in airports…a creative way of increasing awareness of BIA and providing food to airport food distributors.

We heard Dr. Andersen speak this past summer at MakerFaire Detroit about how learning happens. She is a learning futurist at the LIFT Institute and Math Professor at Muskegon Community College.

This series of limited edition art prints are created using a unique algorithm.

Each of the pieces is generated in 3D with parameters defined by the name of its composer, its mood, its key and its tempo. Each forms a floral-like surrealistic art piece, and makes a unique contemporary rendition of classical music in visual form.

This day at Teahupoo- Aug 27th 2011 during the Billabong Pro waiting period is what many are calling the biggest and gnarliest Teahupoo ever ridden. Chris Bryan was fortunate enough to be there working for Billabong on a day that will go down in the history of big wave surfing. The French Navy labeled this day a double code red prohibiting and threatening to arrest anyone that entered the water.

Kelly Slater described the day by saying “witnessing this was a draining feeling being terrified for other people’s lives all day long, it’s life or death. Letting go of that rope one time can change your life and not many people will ever experience that in their life.”

All images were shot by Chris Bryan using the Phantom HD Gold camera.
