Where Have All the Good Seeds Gone?
In 1903, there were seeds available to grow hundreds of varieties of the ten sample crops shown here. 80 years later, seeds for only a few of each type could be found resulting in a 96% reduction in our food variety.
“Today 15 plant and 8 animal species are now relied upon for about 90% of all human food.”
What can be done? Some are turning to “seed-saving” from fruits and vegetables grown from non-hybrid, organic, heirloom seed sources.
We’ll be giving it a go this season to help preserve 13 varieties with the Urban Collection from Living Seed Company.

Chicken Tunnel Man

This permaculturist uses a series of portable tunnels to guide his chocks to the parts of the garden that need their unique attention to detail. Great example of rounding out the garden cycle.

WindowFarm Trial 1

This is the windowfarm that I built over the weekend to shakedown the airlift system and the nutrient levels in the hydroponic solution. (The goal is to grow strawberries through the winter)

I’m growing buttercrunch lettuce from seed started in peat pellets as well as on coconut coir in the column itself. The growing medium is Hydroton LECA clay spheres from Germany. The nutrients are Botanicare.

This is based on the systems developed as part of the Windowfarms Project.

Many thanks to the helpful salespersons at Horizon Hydroponics.

More updates to come.

Dry Fog Hydroponic System Grows Eco-Friendly Vegetables

No soil or pools of water needed…

markethints:

The team of Kobe University, the City of Kobe and a nozzle manufacturer, Ikeuchi Co. Ltd. in Japan introduced a dry fog hydroponic system, which uses much less water than a conventional hydroponic system, Asahi Shimbun Company reports.
